This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects progress when learning to read and write. The most persistent difficulty for those with dyslexia is often spelling, but reading can also be problematic. For many adults with dyslexia, the most frustrating issues can be speed of processing and a weaker short-term memory. When these issues are more severe they can make expressing a point of view or keeping track of conversations difficult. Dyslexia can be managed through different strategies but its effects will often be felt anew in times of stress or unfamiliar situations.

Considered to be the most common hidden disability in the UK, dyslexia affects one in ten people, and there is still much to be done to raise awareness around its impact on people’s lives and the support available.

Making sense of dyslexia.

The theme for Dyslexia Awareness Week is “making sense of dyslexia”. The aim is to shed light on what dyslexia is, how it affects people, and how those affected can be supported at school, in the workplace, and in everyday life. As dyslexia will affect each person differently, tailored support is essential.
