Disclosing your disability to an employer: What, when, why and how

Disclosing your disability isn’t about asking for special treatment; it is about levelling the playing field.
When applying for a job, one of the most difficult decisions to make is whether you are going to inform a potential employer about your disability or health condition. You may be concerned that you will be discriminated against, judgements will be made about your ability and / or that you will be seen as a hassle; and that is before we even begin to talk about concerns over how the information you provide will be used and who it will be shared with.
However, if you are not open about your disability you won’t be able to ask for the support / adjustments that you may need during the recruitment process. Yet without this support you may struggle to demonstrate your suitability for the role. This is likely to result in you being rejected for a role that you are more than capable of doing.
“Thank you both so much for today’s session. Not only did it surpass my expected outcomes but also gave me some much needed inspiration to refresh my disclosure statement.”
This webinar will help you to understand the benefits of disclosing your disability. It will also provide hints and tips on how to write your ‘openness statement’ which is a short, succinct statement about your support needs that you can share with an employer.
This webinar will:
- Highlight why employers ask about disability
- Look at how the information is used and who it is shared with
- Build understanding into the benefits of being open, and the consequences of not
- Consider what information is appropriate to share
- Enable delegates to write their ‘openness statement’
“My confidence improved dramatically since attending the disclosure session. It equipped me with the tools to confidently disclose my disability when I apply to firms.”
