White & Case is a global law firm of more than 2,000 lawyers worldwide. We’ve built an unrivalled network of 44 offices in 30 countries.
That investment is the foundation for our client work in 180 countries today. Complex client projects, nuanced local market knowledge and global capabilities define who we are. Many White & Case clients are multinational organisations with complex needs that require the involvement of multiple offices. As part of our training contract, we offer every trainee a guaranteed six-month overseas seat.
As One Firm with lawyers in offices around the world, we are always working to strike a balance between understanding and respecting our many cultures and developing a single, strong core value system throughout the Firm.
Our position as one of the first US-based law firms to establish a truly global presence has meant that we provide counsel and representation in virtually every area of law that affects cross-border business. Diversity for us is not a choice—it is a professional imperative.
Our strategies for achieving success in this area have centered on dedicating resources to recruiting talent widely, retaining the best and promoting equitably.
The first step – recruitment
One of the greatest challenges law firms face in building a diverse workforce is the limited number of diverse law school students. Attracting diverse talent requires a concerted effort to communicate the Firm’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the support it provides to its lawyers and their development. Our work has substantially increased awareness of the Firm and its commitment, and the number of applicants we are able to recruit.
“White & Case’s global footprint resonates through its commitment to diversity. We actively recruit talented people to work in an environment that encourages everyone to be proud of who they are and what they do”. Claudine Columbres, Partner
Our affinity groups are a critical component in creating a sense of community among the diverse groups within the Firm. Affinity groups are led by partners, counsel or associates. Each group sets its own agenda and goals specific to the issues the community feels are most important to them. Affinity groups are also the drivers of activity to create and enhance awareness among partners and associates.
We use affinity groups and external speakers to support our diversity initiative.

We strive to create an environment in which everyone can bring their authentic and full selves to work and thrive, and where people feel accepted for who they are and experience a sense of belonging.A firm that welcomes everyone
We know that when we leverage our diverse backgrounds, we contribute in new and innovative ways, and we are able to be our best—as individuals, within our communities, and for our clients.
Our Diversity Committees monitor individual performance to ensure that our people are receiving the right support at the right time for their development.

Training Contract
White & Case is looking to recruit ambitious trainees who have a desire to gain hands-on practical experience from day one and a willingness to take charge of their own career. We value globally-minded citizens of the world who are eager to work across borders and cultures, and who are intrigued by solving problems within multiple legal systems. They should have an understanding of international commercial issues and an interest in working on big-ticket, cross-border work. We recruit both law and non-law students and owing to the nature of our work, language skills are of interest. Applicants will be welcomed for their individuality, their ability to contribute to the cutting-edge work we do and the energy with which they approach the job at hand. They should have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a solid 2:1, have a positive and friendly attitude, be enthusiastic and work well in teams.
The training contract consists of four six-month seats, one of which is guaranteed to be spent in one of our overseas offices, including Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Brussels, Dubai, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Moscow, New York, Paris, Prague, Singapore, Stockholm, Tokyo. The remaining three seats can be spent in any one of the Firm’s practice groups in London. Receiving a high level of partner and associate contact from day one, our trainees can be confident that they will receive high-quality, stimulating and rewarding work. Trainees work in small, focused teams, so their colleagues trust them to perform tasks accurately and efficiently. White & Case is a “high-stretch, high-support” workplace that celebrates individual excellence and team success. We actively encourage our trainees to take early responsibility, and there is a strong emphasis on practical training, with plenty of support and feedback. Alongside the training contract, our trainees are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of our globally-renowned pro bono programme, often working directly with clients and even managing small matters. White & Case recruits and develops trainee solicitors with the aim of retaining them on qualification.

Our recruiters are often asked about how prospective candidates can make their application stand out.
To help you make your application stand out from the thousands of others that we receive, here are the Graduate Resourcing team’s top-five tips.
1.Do your research
We want to see that you have researched White & Case and the opportunities that we offer. Explore Inside White & Case to find out about the work that trainees, associates and partners do and get a real insight into working with us. Go a step further by completing our virtual learning experience or attending one of our open days.
2.Demonstrate that you have a global mindset
You don’t need to have travelled extensively to demonstrate your interest in international affairs. Learning a language in your free time, joining an international society or reading widely can all show us that you will thrive in our international teams and enjoy working on projects with teams and clients around the world. Your own heritage or personal experience of diversity is another way to show that you are open to different cultures and nationalities.
3.Show us that you’re a team player
Playing on a sports team, getting involved with a charity or volunteer programme or working in a busy restaurant or bar–these all show that you can work well with different people and play your part in achieving a common goal.
4.Think about the whole package
Your covering letter and application form will be reviewed together. Don’t copy-and-paste from one to the other. We review all applications carefully but have many more candidates than positions. Review your complete application package carefully and make it as good as it can be.
5.Be yourself
What makes you unique? We want to find out about your own life experience and your personality. This is your chance to make an impression and help us identify you as someone we want to get to know better. If you think that you are a great match for White & Case, make sure that you tell us why.
We understand that every candidate is different, and if you require any extra support throughout our processes and programmes, please do not hesitate to speak with us. You can contact Gemma Barns or Jessica Clark, two of White & Case’s Disability and Support Champions, in confidence via phone: +44 20 7532 2899, or email: Gemma.barns@whitecase.com or Jessica.clark@whitecase.com.
We want to get to know you and understand the adjustments that you require in order to undertake our assessment process fully. Every individual is considered on a case-by-case basis and so we welcome you to contact us via email or telephone, whichever you are most comfortable with, so that we can speak to you in confidence.
Examples of adjustments that we have made historically are:
