I joined Barclays Technology Graduate Programme in September 2008. I gained invaluable experience in three rotations for a year. Barclays attracted me due to its opportunities, and helped me to learn Barclays’ world-class service for global customers and varied stakeholders. I have learnt huge amounts when engaging with customers and senior executives. Of course it is a challenging environment, but that makes your job exciting. Barclays’ strategies keep improving year by year such as Anthony Jenkins’s ‘Go-To’ bank initiatives.
As an Information Security Analyst, my main responsibility is to monitor and detect leakage of the bank’s confidential and sensitive information and prevent any security exposure. The everyday objective is to protect Barclays’ information by analysing the electronic transmission and storage of intellectual property, customer data, credit card information and other data in order to support specific legal, regulatory and security requirements.
For a couple of months I had a reasonable adjustment and awareness period. This led to great improvements, and after a short period I managed to take ownership of my role’s responsibilities and participate in my team’s activities with confidence. For example, I no longer need note-taker support and I am able to communicate with colleagues and customers in face-to-face meetings. There is accessibility that I could use such as instant messenger to communicate, transcript of meetings and other methods. Barclays provides me with great support to ensure that I can perform my job fully and enjoy myself while doing it.
Barclays have a reasonable adjustment department and HR to provide the requirements you need to perform your everyday job. Every employee receives training guides online regarding working with a colleague with a disability to provide awareness and guidelines. Every year, there was Deaf Awareness Day as part of a Diversity & Inclusion scheme which promotes awareness. There is in fact a Barclays Group called Reach which is a forum for all colleagues with disabilities. It has been getting strong support from Barclays Chief Executive, Anthony Jenkins, and accessibility is growing and becoming more innovative.
Barclays has been working hard year by year to make things more transparent not just with Disability, but also with Gender, Generation, Sexual Orientation, Working with Families & Carer, etc. The priority has been set by Barclays’ Chief Executive to ensure that the Diversity and Inclusion culture encourages a diversity of thought and innovation that will lead to Barclays’ being the ‘Go-To’ bank.
