My Resources

How did you get started in your career and what drew you to Stewarts Law LLP?

I broke my neck playing polo at the age of 17 in 2004. I am paralysed from the waist down and use a ventilator to support my breathing. Following my injury I returned to school and completed my A levels. I then went on to study at the University of Hertfordshire and graduated with a 1st class Honours in 2009. After completing a two year postgraduate course I started at Stewarts Law LLP in October 2011. My first training seat was in personal injury law and I am currently in my second seat in the company’s aviation and travel department.

How do you manage your disability at work?

I have a scribe that comes to work with me. They do my typing, turn pages, collect books, etc. I have voice recognition software on my computer which also allows me to work independently. Additionally, I have a care team who travel to London with me and provide for my care needs.

How has your employer helped you to do well at your workplace?

They are very flexible and have allowed me to work part-time, so that I don’t overdo it and have time to recharge. They have also given an additional office for my care team which gives me independence at work. They maintain confidentiality at all times and are very receptive to my needs: I have the equipment I need such as a high-adjustable desk; they give me flexible working hours and I am allowed to work from home.

What's the next step for your career?

I intend to complete my legal training over the next two and a half years (I am undertaking it part-time over the course of 4 years) and aim to qualify as a lawyer.

What advice or top tips would you offer?

I would say that there are always ways to overcome the obstacles and challenges. Don’t be put off from University or a career, because all it takes is drive and determination to end up where you want to be.
